    ENDODONTICS UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

    ROOT CANAL TREATMENT UNDER MICROSCOPE

    ROOT CANAL TREATMENT UNDER MICROSCOPE

Endodontic treatment involves the elimination of inflammation within a diseased tooth. The inflammation typically presents as severe pain, which is dependent on the size of the cavity and the extent of infected tissues. Often, in addition to tooth pain, the patient may also experience headaches and sensitivity to hot and cold foods.

“Root canal treatment under the microscope refers to the system of canals located in the root of each tooth. The number of canals varies depending on the specific tooth in question. In most cases, teeth have between 1 to 5 canals.

Thanks to microscopic imaging technology, we enhance the certainty and trust in endodontic treatment. Accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment stages to meet the patient’s needs ensure safety throughout the procedure. Through effective communication between the dentist and the assistant at every step, we monitor progress and confirm the efficacy of the planned therapy.”

~ Dr. Ewelina Frant (Microscopic Endodontics)

What does root canal treatment under a microscope entail?
The treatment involves the removal of infected tissues (pulp) from the tooth, followed by appropriate shaping and disinfection. The prepared tooth is then sealed with a special liquid material that prevents bacteria from penetrating the interior of the tooth. After the completion of root canal treatment, the tooth must be restored. The form and method of restoration depend on the degree of tooth destruction.

How to Prepare for Root Canal Treatment?
First and foremost, come with a positive attitude. If the patient has previously taken radiographic images such as a periapical X-ray, panoramic X-ray, or a CT scan, it is advisable to bring them along. A referral or medical documentation regarding the history of the treated tooth may also be useful. If the patient decides to receive anesthesia, it is important to eat a meal beforehand, as they may have difficulty eating after the anesthesia and during the treatment.

    Does Root Canal Treatment Hurt?
In most cases, the root canal procedure at our practice is comfortable and does not result in heightened pain sensations. Each treatment package includes the option for anesthesia to ensure the patient feels at ease. The intensity of sensations may be primarily due to significant inflammation; therefore, the longer we delay a visit to the doctor, the more challenging it will be to perform the procedure painlessly.

Can Swelling Occur After Root Canal Treatment?
Swelling may occur both before treatment, due to bacterial proliferation prior to the procedure, and after. While this is not common, if a concerning state such as swelling arises after root canal treatment, it is essential to promptly consult the treating physician. It is possible that the doctor will then prescribe antibiotic therapy or other pharmacological treatments.

Stages of Root Canal Treatment Under Microscope:

    Stage 1: Digital Tomography
Proper diagnostics are fundamental. Computed tomography (CT) plays a crucial role in root canal treatment, offering a range of significant benefits that contribute to improved precision and effectiveness of the procedure. Accurate diagnostics allow for the acquisition of three-dimensional images of the teeth and surrounding tissues. This enables us to assess the condition of the tooth and locate infections precisely.

Stage 2: Anesthesia for Patient Comfort and Isolation of the Treated Tooth with a Rubber Dam
This rubber barrier separates the diseased tooth from the microbial environment of the oral cavity.
*Possible restoration of tooth walls – information from the dentist.

Stage 3: Mechanical and Chemical Preparation of the Canals to Remove Necrotic Nerve Tissue and Bacterial Residues
Using specialized instruments such as drills and endodontic tools, the dentist gently removes the infected or necrotic pulp from the interior of the tooth. After pulp removal, the root canals are prepared. At this stage, we use endodontic instruments to thoroughly clean and shape the canals, eliminating any remnants of bacteria and contaminants. Various techniques are employed, including ultrasonics combined with irrigation of the canals using specialized disinfecting solutions.

Stage 4: Drying the Canals with Paper Points and Filling with a Liquid Material
At Boutique Dental, we use a unique biocompatible and bioceramic material for canal fillings.

    Benefits:
    – High biocompatibility, reducing the risk of adverse tissue reactions.
    – Stimulation of physiological processes in bone and mineralization of dentin structure.
    – Favorable conditions for healing tissues in the apical region.
    – Prevention of bacterial growth that could lead to clinical complications.

Is there a warranty on root canal treatment?

A 12-month warranty is provided for teeth originally treated with root canal therapy, excluding retreatment and special services for exceptional cases listed in the price list. The warranty is granted for teeth treated under primary root canal therapy using a microscope. The possibility of providing a warranty is contingent upon the patient’s adherence to the dentist’s recommendations, such as radiological check-ups every six months or as advised, as well as the completion of prosthetic restorations tailored to occlusal conditions, hygiene procedures every six months, and maintenance of required oral hygiene levels. In the event of unsuccessful root canal treatment necessitating tooth extraction, the extraction will be performed free of charge.

How much does root canal treatment under a microscope cost?

The price is typically dependent on the number of canals in the specific tooth and whether it is the first time the tooth is being treated or if it is a retreatment. The complexity of the treatment and difficulties in its execution can increase the cost. Occasionally, additional specialized services may be required, such as the removal of a broken instrument from the canal or closure of perforations. The service price list is available on our website, and we also invite you to contact the clinic’s reception for more information.

Can root canal treatment under a microscope be completed in one visit?

Modern dentistry, combined with the experience of the endodontist, now allows for root canal treatment to be completed in one day. If the condition of the treated tooth does not necessitate splitting the treatment into two visits due to factors such as serous-purulent exudate from the canals and the dentist’s ability to dry and securely fill the prepared canals, root canal treatment, even for multi-canal teeth, is possible. Many patients recall the times when root canal treatment was spread over multiple visits, including waiting for anesthesia, preparation, and filling, totaling approximately four visits. Current dental practices allow for this process to be condensed into a single visit.

Completion of Root Canal Treatment: What’s Next?

As mentioned earlier, every tooth that has undergone root canal treatment needs to be restored. The restoration itself depends on the amount of tissue lost, damaged, and removed during treatment. The gold standard for restoring a tooth after treatment is to reinforce it with a post-and-core foundation. This foundation, made from fiberglass, serves as a backbone that bears the forces transmitted to the tooth. After placing the post-and-core, the dentist works with the patient to choose the most appropriate form of restoration.

    • Composite Restoration — If the tooth has not lost a significant amount of tissue, the dentist can successfully recreate the tooth while preserving its anatomical shapes and functions.
    • Onlay/Inlay — This is a computer-designed “block” that is perfectly fitted to the missing parts of the tooth. The dental technician creates a design and fabricates a composite or porcelain inlay.
    • Ceramic Crown — This is a prosthetic solution, one of the most popular worldwide. When placing the post-and-core, the dentist appropriately shapes its apex to prepare for the crown. Patients commonly refer to the crown as a “cap” for the tooth. Scanning the tooth allows for the design of the most suitable shape and color, as well as the selection of the technical material from which the crown will be made. At Boutique Dental, we only produce highly aesthetic crowns.

Recommendations During and After Root Canal Treatment Under Microscope :
Considering that a tooth naturally weakens after root canal treatment, it is crucial to be cautious when consuming hard foods. Between visits, the tooth is protected with a temporary dressing, and it is gently excluded from occlusion to minimize biting and chewing forces. Increased tenderness and sensitivity of the tooth between visits is a normal response and may persist for several days. In case of significant discomfort, it is advisable to take over-the-counter pain relief medications. If you notice anything concerning during root canal treatment, we always encourage you to contact our reception and our doctors.

Can Root Canal Treatment Be Performed During Pregnancy?
To be honest, it is necessary! Root canal treatment helps eliminate inflammation and minimize harmful bacteria, which can be extremely dangerous during pregnancy. The best solution is to choose a dentist and clinic that offers root canal treatment under a microscope, as this increases the chances of properly treating the tooth. Considering the safety of the expectant mother and child, we do not perform radiological imaging before or after treatment due to X-ray exposure.

Can a Pregnant Woman Receive Anesthesia During Root Canal Treatment?
Absolutely. The latest anesthetics can be administered to pregnant women and are quickly metabolized.
